From the smell of fresh-cut wood to experiencing the transformation of a client’s home, remodeling is truly a passion for Custom Built co-owner Chris Scott. A lifelong Michigan resident, Chris’ interest in all things construction dates back nearly three decades. His first “official” project was the remodeling of his family’s home. From there, Chris devoured every home improvement show he could find on TV and paged through tool catalog after tool catalog. His love of woodworking was for the benefit of others – he offered his craft free of charge for any project involving wood.
In 1994, a second passion − for business − began to run through Chris’ veins. This newly discovered entrepreneurial spirit was further enhanced by a business education through the E-Myth Mastery entrepreneurial program. His worlds came together four years later when he started buying, renovating and reselling houses. From there, Chris started his own construction company in 2001, with a focus on finished basements. Equipped with a Ford Taurus wagon with 160,000 miles on its odometer, a trunk full of toys, and little else, he grew a successful business committed to excellence and quality.
Running on a parallel track was brother Michael, who was operating his own business, building beautiful decks throughout mid-Michigan. In 2006, the brothers combined their passions and created Custom Built Basements and Decks. Known throughout the region for their high-quality craftsmanship and commitment to customer service, Custom Built has quickly become the Lansing area’s premiere home improvement specialists.
Most recently, Custom Built moved to its Okemos showroom in 2009. The company’s new headquarters provide the perfect backdrop for showcasing past projects, construction options and building materials.
In the community, Chris and his wife, Sherry, are active at the Life Changes Christian Center in Lansing and have participated in a number of mission trips to Guatemala.
